We Have Seen The Enemy...

And it's these people.

They call themselves NoDeathTax.org, using the typical and unfortunately effective line that the estate tax is a "death tax." That's bullshit, and they know it. Dead people don't pay taxes, even if they're plutocrats. No, their inheritors are the ones who pay a tax upon the receipt of millions of dollars -- need we even mention those are the only people who pay this tax?? -- just as they would with any asset transfer this large.

And they're from the outright lie of a name "American Family Business Institute." Oh well, if they're an "Institute," never mind then!

Keeping the estate tax as part of federal law a no-brainer, which is probably why they're so afraid John McCain will do the right thing and vote to keep it. They're running a TV spot to try to convince him, which you should watch just so you know exactly what they're saying.

If you live in Arizona, please call John McCain's office -- (202) 224-2235 in DC, click here for the others -- and tell him to vote to do the right thing. It so happens that John Kyl, the other Republican senator from Arizona is a co-sponsor of the Frist bill. So once you've called McCain's people, you should call Kyl, too -- (202) 224-4521 in DC, (602) 840-1891 in Phoenix. He's not going to budge -- but we have to let him know we're here, too.

Comments:
I can't possibly agree with this and you aren't using your head.

If you bought a house in the early 70s for cheapo in a good area, there is every chance that it has increased in value exponentially. If you are living with a life partner who has no right of survivorship and you die, your partner will have to sell his or her house to pay the estate taxes.

Those assets that weren't cashable while you were alive add up after you die, and hitting someone with the estate tax on it is DOUBLE taxation.

I completely disagree with this position. And if you're dumb enough to think that the really rich haven't already set up foundations and trusts to get around this, then you're smoking something you should get off of.

Better yet, have a REAL conversation with a top estate attorney and find out just how off the mark you are about how the "rich" paid estate taxes in the past. It's the lower and middle classes who pay through the noses on this. And I can attest to it because I just went through it.

Estate taxes have impoverished family farms, and family businesses. Get your facts straight instead of warbling up this garbage.

You are completely wrong-headed on this issue ... and if the Dems would support this idea, there would be a landslide.

You must be crazy, or a wingnut, or probably both.

Only the TOP 2% of the wealthiest Americans pay this tax. That house you bought in the 70s must be a 100-room mansion.

If the Dems support this issue there might be a landslide -- in favor of the Democrats.

So... the family farm is not worth millions? And the small family owned business is not worth millions (at least on paper). And if they are, when the "owner" dies and passes these assets on to their rightful heirs, you believe that those heirs should suddenly be pressed to come up with a large chunk of cash in order to keep the business that their father/mother or whoever worked (and paid taxes on) to build up?

For what? To give some lazy does nothing a free ride? Or put more cash in the hands of useless politicians?

I'm hoping to have a million $ before I die. I might spend it all on a retirement home complete with hot and cold running nurses. Or, I may want to leave it to my daughter and her kids. Either way, I will have already paid plenty of taxes on that money. I don't even care if it's all in pennies. I earned it, saved it, paid taxes on it, and it's not yours. So keep your hands off of it.

How do you get off deciding what I get to do with my money. Suppose the rest of us get together and decide that for you, bread and water is good enough. Any thing else is a luxury and should be redistributed to those with less than you? I mean, since you seem to be in favor of that whole redistribution idea.

I say all those in favor of the death tax pay in advance... You know... You (idiot) should pay 1/3 of what ever you have in assets ever year. This should be above and beyond what ever you are paying in income taxes.

Do you have a job? Do you hope to improve your self to the point that you can start saving for your future? If so please remember to send in the extra taxes that you seem to be in favor of. Be the first one on your street to do this. I'm sure that no one else will mind, if that is what you want to do your you own money.

You must be some real prize... Loser.

By the way, I forgot to mention this in my above post; your blog sucks. There are only 2 comments on the whole thing (three with this one). And please, don’t bother responding to my 2 posts. Odds are good that I will never be back to read them.

What a moron you must be.
